kaws...artist of our times

CBS Sunday morning featured a graffiti artist who hasn't done graffiti in over ten years. Yet at a recent exhibition opening in Manhattan, he drew a mixed crowd of high brow art collectors and edgy street artists.

That's kaws...a graffiti artist gone mainstream.

I won't tell his story here, because you can read about him at the CBS site. But I was riveted to the story and amazed by his art. Sure wish I'd been at that opening.

Oh! And the story of how he got his name? They were the letters he loved to paint when he was doing graffiti.

tarot

In 1999 I collaborated with several other artists to produce a Tarot deck. The deck is titled, "The Inner Vision Tarot." I've studied the tarot and was delighted when I was asked to participate in the deck. I'd been wanting to do a deck of my own for some time. Still do, actually.

Every now and then I'll get an e-mail from someone who's seen the deck on my website and wants to know where to purchase it. These e-mails always get me thinking about the creation of those cards. It was such a creatively fulfilling project.

My assignment was to produce 3 cards: The Hanged One, 10 of Coins and 5 of Cups. (The 5 of Cups is probably one of my favorite cards in the minor arcana.) I had to dig them out of my image archives, but here they are!

You can read the story of the deck on my website. I sold out of my allocation of decks long ago. We were led by Steph King aka NoMonet and I think she still has decks for sale.

Flower petals fly like birds through the sky. The moon becomes a saucer from which I eat, and a fallen leaf is food for my table. Like souls touching, poetry, music, paint, and the camera keep calling, and I can't bring myself to say no. All those things have become like alien wonders, beckoning. this makes me happy!

Today has been rainy and dark. But what makes me happy today is color...

Like these beautiful Yuzen papers I bought today from my friend's shop...Ichiyo Art Center here in Atlanta. (They sell online, too!)

I'll be using these for mixed-media collages I've been dying to do for the longest time. Here's an example of a piece I did in 2000...monotype with collaged paper.

And then there's the new Real Simple which is so yummy! I love this magazine. Did you know they also have a show on PBS now? Anyway, the color on this cover makes me happy...and so does my new watch with the blue band.

In spite of the rain and gloom, today I feel bathed in color. And that makes me happy.
